Publication awards 2023 for MSE graduates

Benedikt Brach, graduate of the MSE degree programme (MSE-15), received the publication prize of the Mainz Association for the Promotion of Epidemiology, Biometry, Informatics, Documentation and Cancer Registries (VEBIK) for scientific publications by students on 12 September 2023.  He was honoured for his work on the effects of the closure of the Theodor Heuss Bridge in Mainz on local air quality.

At the beginning of 2020, the Theodor Heuss Bridge between the cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden was closed to traffic for maintenance work. As part of a collaboration between the IMBEI and the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, the effects on local air pollution were investigated. To this end, pollutant and weather data was collected at the bridge during and around the closure period and compared with data from measuring stations in the surrounding urban area (Impact of the temporary closure of a major bridge on local air quality in two large German cities: an accountability study.
