All you need is „LOUD, LOUD, LOUD!“ Mit diesen Worten fasste Dr. Cynthia Fox den fünften deutschen Lee-Silverman-Voice-Treatment (LSVT) Workshop zur logopädischen Behandlung von Patienten mit Morbus Parkinson zusammen. Zum zweiten Mal veranstaltete der Deutsche Bundesverband für Logopädie (e.V.) diesen, unter Logopäden sehr begehrten, Workshop in Kooperation mit der Mainzer Lehranstalt. 87 TeilnehmerInnen aus dem gesamten Bundesgebiet, aus Belgien und Luxemburg waren in den Pulverturm nach Mainz gekommen und folgten gespannt, kritisch und ambitioniert den Ausführungen der amerikanischen Logopädinnen Dr. Cynthia Fox und Dr. Angela Halpern. Am ersten Tag stellte Fox zunächst die theoretischen Grundlagen des Parkinson und der LSVT-Therapie dar. Nachmittags führte Dr. Halpern mit konkreten Beispielen und praktischen Übungen in die Behandlungsmethode ein. Spätestens bei der Erprobung des lauten „Ahs“ ging ein „Aha“ durch die Reihen der Therapeuten.

Für den folgenden Tag hatte die Lehranstalt für Logopädie Parkinsonpatienten eingeladen. Die Universitätsklinik Mainz und der dbl hatten mit Pressemitteilungen auf den Workshop aufmerksam gemacht und 27 Patienten folgten der Einladung in den Pulverturm. Der Fachliche Leiter der Lehranstalt stellte den Betroffenen zunächst die noch junge Therapiemethode vor. Das beeindruckende Beispiel eines im letzten Jahr in der Lehranstalt behandelten Patienten, motivierte für die folgende Therapiestunde. Vier bis fünf Workshopteilnehmer erprobten eine Stunde lang die neu erlernte LSVT-Methode mit einem Parkinsonpatienten. Aus allen Räumen des Pulverturms schallte es „LOUD“. Viele Patienten erfuhren erstmals wieder, dass sie eine klangvolle Stimme produzieren können. „Wo finde ich eine Logopädin, bei der ich LSVT-Therapie erhalten kann?“ war nach der Probetherapie die am häufigsten gestellte Frage. Ein eindeutiges Zeichen für die überzeugende Umsetzung der Methode durch die 87 frisch zertifizierten LSVT-LogopädInnen. Die amerikanischen Kolleginnen zeigten sich von dem Engagement der LogopädInnen und dem Einsatz der Patienten außerordentlich begeistert. Über einen weiteren LSVT-Workhop in Mainz wird bereits nachgedacht: „We look forward to next year’s event.“

LOUD! LOUD! LOUD!

All you need is “LOUD, LOUD, LOUD!“ With these words, Dr. Cynthia Fox concluded the fifth German Lee-Silverman-Voice-Treatment (LSVT) workshop for the logopedic  treatment  of Parkinson's disease patients. It was the second time that the German Association of Logopedics (Deutsche Bundesverband für Logopädie e.V.) organised this highly popular event for logopedics in cooperation with the academy in Mainz. 87 participants from all over Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg came to the academy at the Pulverturm and watched carefully, critically and highly ambitioned as the two American logopedics Dr. Cynthia Fox and Dr. Angela Halpern demonstrated their work.

On the first day, Fox gave a detailed explanation of the effects of  Parkinson’s disease and the theoretical foundation of the LSVT therapy. Dr. Halpern helped to explain the treatment by giving concrete and practical examples. And when everybody had to join in with the loud “Ah”, you could also hear a loud sigh of comprehension from the logopedics.

The following day, patients of Parkinson’s disease came to the Academy of Logopedy, too. The teaching hospital in Mainz and the dbl had sent out invitations via newspaper  to Parkinson’s disease patients to join in with the workshop, which 27 people followed. The head of the academy welcomed the guests and explained to them the fairly new treatment method they would soon experience. He showed them a very succesful and impressive example of the treatment conducted last year, which was highly motivating for all the patients. Groups of four or five participants tried out the new LSVT  method with a patient of Parkinson’s disease for about an hour. From every room you could hear LOUD LOUD LOUD exercising. For many patients this was a crucial moment, as they had not been able to produce their speech as loud as in their session for a very long time. “Where can I find a logopedic to continue the LSVT therapy?“- was a much asked question after the treatment, which is probably the best sign for a succesful day for the newly certificated LSVT logopedics. The American collegues were deeply impressed by the enthusiastic logopedics and the wholehearted commitment of the patients. “We look forward to next year’s event“ were the finishing words of the American logopedics- so the next LSVT workshop could well be in Mainz again.
