The Dikic group is interested in deciphering the molecular mechanisms of cellular signaling pathways, which have a high relevance to human diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative disorders and inflammation. Here, they focus on the two major cellular quality control pathways: the ubiquitin proteasome system and autophagy. Both pathways are involved in almost all cellular signaling processes and provide protection against rapid aging and various human diseases. Their research focus ranges from ubiquitin signaling networks, including the role of ubiquitination and phosphorylation as well as linear ubiquitin chains in immune response and pathogen defense, to the selectivity and specificity of autophagy, with an emphasis on selective autophagy receptors and adaptor proteins in different autophagy pathways as well as the relevance of selective autophagy for human diseases, such as neuropathies and ALS.
