European Heart Journal reports on world`s first “Heart Valve Unit”
Article in renowned cardiology journal highlights the importance of the new treatment setting for people with heart valve problems
Recently the first Heart Valve Unit was opened at the Deparment of Cardiology, University Medical Center Mainz. This is a new patient care structure dedicated for patients with heart valve disease. Now, the European Heart Journal published an article about this heart valve unit in their latest issue, an issue being devoted to address the needs, the techniques and the success rates concerning minimally invasive heart valve implantations: bit.ly/2mB7Stw. The Mainz University Medical Center is one of the leading centers in the field of minimally invasive heart valve therapy, both nationally and internationally, and will implant more than 700 heart valves in 2018.
“This report in the latest edition of European Heart Journal is a great honor but also an acknowledgement of our tremendous efforts to improve the quality of care in patients with heart valve disease”, says Univ.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Münzel, Director of Cardiology I, Department of Cardiology at the Mainz University Medical Center. "These patients are usually old and have serious comorbidities that require intensive monitoring, especially after the procedure. To my knowledge, it is the first unit of this kind and I am convinced that it will be a role model. This model will go international soon," comments Münzel.
“Mainz will implant in 2018 more than 200 Mitraclips® and also treat more than a total 300 atrioventricular heart valve diseases involving the mitral and tricuspid valve, a number which is worldwide unique” adds Ralph Stefan von Bardeleben, Head of division of structural heart diseases in Mainz.
