Barriers to resuscitation by laypersons - The perspective of the emergency personnel (BaLaRea - SE) Every year there are about 50,000 cardiovascular arrests in Germany. However, only in 39% of the cases a resuscitation is carried out by laypersons present before the emergency services arrive. The time until the resuscitation measures are carried out is the decisive factor influencing the survival prognosis of the affected persons. It is not clear which situational and structural factors prevent laypersons from resuscitation.
So far, there is only speculation for the German-speaking countries about why the proportion of resuscitations that are started before the arrival of the rescue service is so low. Without knowledge of the reasons it is not clear which measures could increase this. However, only when potentially inhibiting factors are known, appropriate interventions can be developed to increase the resuscitation and ultimately survival rates. In our study "BaLaRea-SE" we want to find out which factors influence the low rate of lay resuscitation from the point of view of the operational personnel.
For this purpose, several group discussions with 5 to 7 persons from the circle of the emergency personnel are conducted. The duration of the group discussion is estimated to be about 90-120 minutes. Depending on the current situation, the discussions can take place online or at the Institute for Medical Biometry, Epidemiology and Informatics (IMBEI).
Aim of the study:The aim of this study is to determine the factors that, from the perspective of the emergency personnel (e.g. control center dispatchers, emergency paramedics, paramedics, paramedics or emergency physicians), discourage laypersons from starting resuscitation measures before the arrival of the rescue service.
On the basis of the information gained from this study, a follow-up study will be conducted to determine the views of (potential) lay resuscitation personnel. This will be done by qualitative interviews and a quantitative questionnaire. In order to be able to develop a questionnaire that is as precise as possible, the findings of the study "BaLaRea - SE" are essential.
