Presenting Research Results - Scientific English (hybrid)

Course objective:

The aim of this hybrid workshop is to improve the ability to hold scientific presentations in English. Participants will learn and practise the necessary communication skills in the workshop.

Topics:

  • The do's and don'ts of effective scientific presentations             
  • Designing a "message-based" presentation
  • Effectively beginning your presentation
  • Adapting the language of written text sources to presentation language
  • Communication and rhetoric techniques
  • Useful phrases / structuring and linking elements
  • Dealing with (difficult) questions in the Q&A

Methology:
In the workshop, theory input will be alternated with numerous practical exercises. The participants will also receive extensive feedback on their communication and presentation skills.

On the 3rd training day, the group will be divided into two sub-groups (one group in the morning / one group in the afternoon) for a simulation of a conference. Each participant will give a short presentation and lead a Q&A session. The presentation will be filmed (video feedback), and the presenter will receive detailed feedback from the other participants and the trainer.

Target audience: TransMed's doctoral students and clinician scientists. B2-Knowledge of English is required.

Maximum number of participants: 14

Preparation:
Participants should bring an idea for the content of a 10-minutes presentation about their research to the first workshop day, which they will work on in the session. The presentation needs to be fully prepared only for the final (third) day.
