Cardiac and Vascular Late Sequelae in Long-term Surviviors of Childhood Cancer (CVSS)

Principal Investigators:

  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Wild, M.Sc. (Coordination; Preventive Cardiology and Medical Prevention, 2nd Medical Clinic)
  • PD Dr. Claudia Spix  (German Childhood Cancer Registry at IMBEI)
  • Prof. Jörg Faber (Pediatric Hematology/Oncology)

Brief summary

Thanks to improved therapies, the proportion of survivors after childhood cancer has continuously been increasing in recent decades. Therefore, the study of late effects, especially in relation to therapies, continues to come into focus.

The focus of the CVSS study is cardiovascular disease research in individuals after childhood cancer. This prospective cohort study is designed to gain a better understanding of the incidence, causes and progression of cardiovascular disease after childhood cancer. It benefits from the close interdisciplinary cooperation between the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology of the Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, the German Childhood Cancer Registry (DKKR) at the Institute of Medical Biometry, Epidemiology and Informatics (IMBEI) as well as the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) at the 2nd Medical Clinic and Polyclinic (Cardiology and Angiology Clinic) at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The project is supported by the German Research Foundation.

This study examines 1,000 individuals who were treated for childhood cancer at Mainz University Hospital or surrounding hospitals between 1980 and 1990. Participation in the study, which began in October 2013, involves a thorough examination at the examination center with a focus on the cardiovascular system. These examinations, which last a total of 6 hours, are conducted at the study center of the Gutenberg Health Study at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. In addition, an extensive bio bank will be established for molecular biological evaluations. The work program of the "Clinical Epidemiology" of the CTH deals with questions concerning diseases in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis.
