Our Clinic

The Department of Cardiology, University Medical Center Mainz of Johannes Gutenberg University, is the leading cardiology center in Rhineland-Palatinate and the metropolitan Rhine-Main area in Germany. The main focus of our center is diagnostic and treatment of patients with:
  • Acute Coronary Syndromes
  • Heart Valve Disease
  • Arrhythmia
  • Heart Failure
  • Peripheral Artery Disease
  • Congenital Heart Disease
In 2018, the center treated 10,500 inpatients and 22.000 outpatients.

The clinic has 6 cardiac catheterization laboratories where we perform per year:
  • around 3500 diagnostic cardiac catheterizations and percutaneous coronary interventions in patients with coronary artery disease and heart failure
  • 800 minimally invasive heart valve interventions
  • 450 TAVIs, 200 Mitraclips and 100 Tricuclips
  • 1000 ablations for patients with atrial fibrillation
  • Implant of 500 pacemakers and 250 defibrillators with or without resynchronization
Our Chest Pain Unit treats more than 6000 patients per year, approx. 1000 with an acute coronary syndrome.

Recently we introduced a so called manager check unit.

We are certified by the German Society of Cardiology with respect to Interventional Cardiology, as a TAVI and a Mitraclip Center.

Key research areas are the identification of the pathophysiology leading to vascular dysfunction. In preclinical and clinical studies we investigate:
  • the adverse effects of traditional but also novel environmental risk factors such as noise and air pollution on oxidative stress and vascular (endothelial) function
  • the diagnostic value of biomarkers with respect to cardiovascular disease.
In particular, we explore the involvement of risk factors and genes in causing vascular dysfunction in the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS), one of the largest prospective population-based cohort trials worldwide. The Center of Cardiology initiated and is part of the Centre of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH), an integrated research and treatment center, and of the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), with research group focusing on the interaction between myocardial and vascular disease.
