Christian is working on autophagy which represents an important pathway for cellular protein and organelle degradation and whose disturbance seems to play a crucial role in cancer and several neurodegenerative disorders.

As a PostDoc he was supported by the ERA-Net Neuron project 'GINA' in which he investigated the behavior of neural and endothelial cells on biomaterial scaffolds.

In 2008 he started as a PhD student at the Institute of Pathology at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The focus of his thesis was on the development of an in vitro blood-brain barrier model as well as on the interaction of nanoparticles with endothelial cells.
