Biosketch

Ulrich Förstermann, MD, PhD, is a Professor at the Department of Pharmacology of the Johannes Gutenberg University Medical Center (Mainz) and – since 2013 – Chief Scientific Officer and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.  From 2009 to 2013 he served as Vice President of Research of the Johannes Gutenberg University (Mainz).

Dr. Förstermann is a graduate of Albert Ludwig’s University Medical School, Freiburg, Germany, and earned a PhD in Pharmacology at Albert Ludwig’s University. He served as Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology and then Assistant Medical Director at Hannover Medical School in Hannover, Germany. Dr. Förstermann was Project Director at Abbott Laboratories as well as an Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, USA.

Dr. Förstermann’s research interests include the biochemistry of nitric oxide (NO) synthases, the cardiovascular functions of nitric oxide, enzyme systems involved in the generation and control of oxidative stress in the vasculature as well as the pharmacological control of vascular oxidative stress.

Dr. Förstermann was the Chairman of the ‘Collaborative Research Center 553’ of the German Research Foundation from 1998 to 2007 and Chairman of the Coordinating Committee of the ‘Center for Natural Sciences and Medicine’ (NMFZ) of the Johannes Gutenberg University from 1998 to 2008.

He has published over 275 scientific papers and over 70 scientific book chapters. His work has been cited over 41,000 times, his Hirsch Index (as of 2020) is 101.

Since 2013, Dr. Förstermann has been the CSO of the University Medical Center Mainz and the Dean of Medicine.
