Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)

rTMS is an effective and well tolerated innovative treatment method for depression. The stimulation aligns imbalances of chemical messengers in the brain (neurotransmitters) and normalizes communication between nerve cells. This results in improvements of mood, activity level and cognitive control of negative feelings and thoughts.

Procedure

In contrast to Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), rTMS is a non-invasive stimulation method, performed with a magnetic coil placed on the top of the skull, while the patient is awake. Modern methods of neuro-navigation allow precise, individually adapted stimulation and modulation of brain activity. Typically, the treatment is performed in 20 to 30 sessions over a period of 4 to 6 weeks. Each treatment session lasts about 15 minutes, during which the patient sits in a comfortable relaxation chair.

Risks and side effects

In general, rTMS is very well tolerated. Participation in other therapies is possible immediately after stimulation. In some cases, temporary headaches may occur at the stimulation site.
