Research topic

The aim of the NKD project „National Decade Against Cancer“ funded by the BMBF is to promote preventive measures, diagnostics and therapies for cancer and thereby to prevent new onset of cancer, increase quality of life and optimize treatments of cancer patients.

COPS is a treatment comparison study addressing cancer patients under overall project management of Prof. Dr. Hans-Christoph Friederich, University Hospital Heidelberg. The study examines, whether sports therapy increases quality of life as good as psychooncological treatment.

The study is carried out in cooperation with Dr. Betz, Institute of Physical Therapy, Prevention und Rehabilitation and Prof. Simon, Institute for Sports Medicine, Prevention & Rehabilitation. It has started with a conceptualization phase located in Heidelberg. Patients are asked to contribute actively into the different processes of research.

Within the multicenter study 8 tumor centers (incl. University Cancer Center Mainz) will include a total of 2700 cancer patients randomly assigned to 12 weeks of sports therapy or psychoncological treatment. Follow-ups are planned 3 and 12 months after treatment.
The total funding period is 6 years within a conceptualization phase of 4 months and patient recruitment of 4 years.
