Research topic
The Gutenberg COVID-19 Study (GCS) is a prospective cohort study based on the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS). The study involves the drawing of 1,008 individuals in representative waves with the goal of including a total of 10,000 participants aged between 45 and 88 years. The study participants will be examined twice with a distance of 4 months. The investigations essentially comprise the completion of a questionnaire and the collection of a stool sample at home as well as a visit to the study center with a personal short interview and the collection of bio samples. From the first study visit onwards, the health status of the participants will be continuously monitored on an outpatient basis over a period of up to eight months using the Gutenberg COVID-19 App. The GCS aims to analyze the impact of the SARS-CoV2 pandemic on public health, to investigate the actual spread of SARS-CoV-2 ("corona") and COVID-19 disease in Rhineland-Palatinate and to identify risk factors for mild and severe disease progression. The focus of the psychosomatic research is to investigate the effects of the infection and the pandemic on individual physical and mental health. First results will be published during the ongoing data collection, probably from early 2021, and will be available to the population and decision makers.
