Focus of Clinical and Experimental Research

1) Risk stratification and management of acute pulmonary embolism:

Particular emphasis on biomarker-based diagnosis, severity assessment and treatment of right ventricular dysfunction

2) Basic mechanisms and novel therapeutic and preventive approaches to atherosclerosis and thrombosis:

- Emphasis on the association of atherothrombosis with the metabolic syndrome and the possible direct atherothrombotic effects of specific adipocyte hormones (leptin).

Coordination of Major Multicenter Clinical Studies

  • Member, national steering committee: Management Strategies and Prognosis of Pulmonary Embolism (MAPPET) - 1 – A multicentre prospective German registry; published J Am Coll Cardiol 1997 (second author), Circulation 1997 (first author)
  • Chair, national steering committee: Management Strategies and Prognosis of Pulmonary Embolism (MAPPET) - 2 – A multicentre cohort study to assess the prognostic value of cardiac troponin levels; published Circulation 2002 (first author)
  • Member, international steering committee and executive committee: Management Strategies and Prognosis of Pulmonary Embolism (MAPPET) - 3 – A multicentre double-blind randomised trial comparing alteplase with heparin alone in normotensive patients with evidence of right ventricular dysfunction or pressure overload; published N Engl J Med 2002 (first author)
  • Member, international steering committee: Right Heart Thrombi European Registry (RIHTER) a prospective registry of the characteristics, management and follow-up of patients with acute pulmonary embolism and echocardiographic detection of free-floating thrombi in the right atrium or ventricle (recruiting)
  • Chair, steering committee: Pulmonary Embolism International Thrombolysis Trial (PEITHO) - A prospective, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, international, multicentre, parallel-group comparison trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of single i.v. bolus tenecteplase plus standard anticoagulation as compared with standard anticoagulation in normotensive patients with acute pulmonary embolism and with echocardiographic (or spiral CT) and laboratory evidence of right ventricular dysfunction; published N Engl J Med 2014 (first author); two-year follow-up ongoing
  • Site principal investigator and National Coordinator: Effect of Οtamixaban Versus Unfractionated Heparin + Eptifibatide in Patients With Unstable Angina/Non ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction Undergoing Early Invasive Strategy (TAO) - Randomised, double-blind, triple-dummy trial to compare the efficacy of otamixaban with unfractionated heparin + eptifibatide, in patients with unstable angina / non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction scheduled to undergo an early invasive strategy. NCT01076764 (recruiting)
