Welcome to the webpage of the Institute for Molecular Medicine Mainz.
Our institute is interested to study the mechanisms leading to the development of autoimmune diseases. The main interest is the mechanisms that leads to the induction and development of multiple sclerosis (MS) using a mouse model for the disease. This mouse model is termed experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and it shows many symptoms of MS. Using genetic methods we generate new mouse models in which we mutate or over express different genes in a tissue specific manner. Using those genetically modified mice we are able to study the contribution of these genes to the induction of EAE and further understand the mechanism underlining MS.
A second main interest in the institute is the study of the tumor suppressor gene CYLD. CYLD is a gene, found to be mutated in patients suffering from cylindromatosis. We have generated different mouse strains with tissue specific mutations of CYLD. We use these mice in order to understand the mechanisms underlining the functions of CYLD in vivo.
