Dear visitor,
a warm welcome to the website of the Institute of Pathobiochemistry!
Our institute belongs to the preclinical institutes of the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. As such, we are committed to teaching medical and dentistry students the basic principles of natural sciences and molecular medicine that form the basis of biological processes as well as the basis for the development, diagnosis, and therapy of disease. To do so, we offer lectures, seminars, and practical courses in biochemistry and molecular biology. Our own scientific interests focus on the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders and, consequently, aging, protein homeostasis, autophagy, and evolutionary mechanisms of cellular biochemistry. In order to understand how and why most human neurodegenerative disorders are associated with age, how they are initiated and how they progress, we connect the molecular and cellular aspects of aging with the analysis of neurodegenerative processes. Three independent research groups (Behl Group/The Autophagy Lab, Pietrzik Group, Moosmann Group) at our institute are dedicated to investigating the many different aspects of these key issues.
Assembled on the following pages, you will find the most important information regarding the Institute of Pathobiochemistry. We invite you to have a look around and feel free to contact us if you have any questions as well as suggestions.
Sincerely Yours,
Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Christian Behl
(Director of the Institute)
