a warm welcome to the website of the Institute of Pathobiochemistry!
Our institute belongs to the preclinical institutes of the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. As such, we are committed to teaching medical and dentistry students the basic principles of natural science and molecular medicine that underly biological processes as well as the development, diagnosis, and therapy of disease. To do so, we offer lectures, seminars and practical courses in biochemistry and molecular biology.
Our own scientific interest is directed towards the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders and, consequently, aging, protein homeostasis, autophagy, and evolutionary mechanisms of cellular biochemistry. In order to understand how and why most human neurodegenerative disorders are associated with age, how they are initiated and progress, we are connecting the molecular and cellular aspects of aging with the analysis of neurodegenerative processes. Three independent research groups (Behl Group/The Autophagy Lab, Pietrzik Group, Moosmann Group) at our institute are dedicated to investigating the many different aspects of these key issues.
Assembled on the following pages, you will find the most important information regarding the Institute of Pathobiochemistry. We invite you to have a look around and feel free to contact us if you have any questions as well as suggestions.
