On behalf of the Ministry of Science and Health of Rhineland-Palatinate, the University Medical Center Mainz conducted population health surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) in Rhineland-Palatinate. As part of the project, the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 in Rhineland-Palatinate, including undetected cases, was continuously assessed in representative population cohorts in order to provide a real-time picture of the current infection situation. The first phase of SentiSurv RLP took place from December 2022 to the end of April 2023, with testing twice a week. The second phase ran from June to the end of December 2023, during which participants tested themselves for SARS-CoV-2 once a week. The third phase took place from January to March 2024. During this phase, as in the second phase, participants tested themselves for SARS-CoV-2 once a week. Since 31 March 2024, the app has been in standby mode and the dashboard is therefore no longer updated. The aim of SentiSurv RLP was to develop and evaluate an app-based monitoring and early warning system to help protect the population from future public health threats, including those not related to pandemics. In addition, the smartphone app provides new opportunities for direct interaction and communication between the public, researchers and policymakers.
