The aim of the project was to determine the number of new SARS-CoV-2 infections (incidence) on a weekly basis using a sentinel cohort in five cities in Rhineland-Palatinate as regional monitoring sites. The aim was to establish a data basis for continuously monitoring the health of the population of Rhineland-Palatinate, enabling early and targeted infection control measures to be implemented in response to increasing numbers of new infections and helping to prevent the occurrence of long-term consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Taking undetected cases into account, the surveillance and early warning system (SentiSurv RLP) therefore provided regional population health data, particularly on SARS-CoV-2 infections, in Rhineland-Palatinate via a dashboard. For this purpose, approximately 14,000 people from population-representative groups in the cities of Mainz, Kaiserslautern, Koblenz, Ludwigshafen and Trier regularly tested themselves for SARS-CoV-2 using rapid antigen tests from December 2022 to the end of March 2024. In addition, participants were asked to provide further information about their health status. Participants submitted their data digitally via a smartphone app.
