The interdisciplinary study design enabled a comprehensive, systems medicine-based assessment of Post-COVID and a clear differentiation from other conditions. The study included individuals with widely varying courses of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, ranging from those who were unaware of their infection and those who did not require treatment to patients who required outpatient care or even intensive care.
A particular focus was placed on the detection of subclinical changes that had not yet manifested as symptoms but could provide important insights into the development and progression of Post-COVID syndrome. The study thus aimed to make an important contribution to the development of objective diagnostic approaches and needs-based treatment. In addition, comprehensive Post-COVID data were collected for Rhineland-Palatinate for the first time, providing a basis for the development of targeted and effective healthcare structures for people affected by Post-COVID.
As part of the study design, participants were invited to take part in the study in writing; voluntary registration was not possible. Participation was independent of whether or not individuals experienced symptoms suggestive of Post-COVID. All examinations were conducted at the University Medical Center Mainz. During a two-day screening examination, participants underwent comprehensive assessments for potential long-term health effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Where necessary, additional specialist examinations could be carried out at the participating clinical departments. After completion of the examinations, the results were discussed during a medical consultation and provided to participants in the form of a detailed final report.
Primary objectives:
- Comprehensive characterization of individuals following COVID-19 as a key prerequisite for understanding the still insufficiently researched clinical picture of Post-COVID
- Use of an extensive biobank to investigate potential pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development and progression of Post-COVID
