The Gutenberg Post-COVID Study has been completed. As part of the study, approximately 500 participants were comprehensively examined between 2021 and 2023 following a SARS-CoV-2 infection. Data collection included an online questionnaire, a two-day interdisciplinary screening examination at Mainz University Medical Center, and, when necessary, in-depth specialist examinations at the participating clinics.

Participation in the study began with preliminary data collection via an online questionnaire. This collected information on pre-existing conditions, medications, and current symptoms.

This was followed by a two-day screening examination at Mainz University Medical Center. The examinations were conducted in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Center for Cardiology and included tests in the fields of cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, oral medicine, psychosomatics, and neuropsychiatry. The first day of examinations lasted about five hours. On the second day of the examination, participants returned the long-term monitoring devices and underwent an MRI scan, which together took about 1.5 hours. The results of the screening examinations were explained to the participants during a consultation with a physician and were also summarized in a detailed written report. Findings requiring immediate treatment were communicated to the affected individuals without delay.

In cases of abnormal test results or corresponding symptoms, participants were referred to the participating specialty clinics at Mainz University Medical Center for further diagnostic evaluation. Depending on the individual findings, in-depth examinations could be conducted in fields such as anesthesiology, neurology, infectious diseases, gastroenterology, nephrology, rheumatology, pulmonology, psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, and cardiology.
