University Center for Preventive Medicine

Profile Center of the University Medical Center Mainz

Those who stay healthy in the first place do not need to be healed. The teaching of early detection and prevention of diseases is not a modern invention. In ancient times, doctors and scientists, with the founder of medicine Hippocrates of Kos (460 - ca. 377 B.C.) leading the way, were already engaging in the fight against disease factors. The knowledge about the significance of prevention has accumulated over the centuries and its measures have been expanding continuously. Today, they double approximately every five years.

Therefore, an important aspect of modern medicine is to not only heal people, but also to prevent their illness. This requires an understanding of the origin and development of diseases, as well as observation and research on factors that turn a healthy person into a sick one.

Prevention (from Latin praevenire: "to anticipate"), and in the narrower sense of disease prevention, refers to measures that maintain or improve the state of health of the population, individual population groups or individuals.
