Movement Disorders and Neurostimulation
Background to movement disorders
Movement disorders are the most frequently occurring neurological illnesses, including the following diseases:
- Parkinson’s disease
- Tremors
- Dystonia
- Restless legs syndrome
- More seldom movement disorders associated with hyper- and hypokinesia (e.g., ataxia, chorea, cerebellar diseases, Wilson’s disease, tics, Gilles-de-la-Tourette Syndrome)
Diagnostic methods
All clinical and instrumental diagnostic methods for movement disorders are available in our clinic. Additional examinations (e.g., a neurophysiological or neuropsychological examination of attention and memory, or genetic consultation) are possible together with other sections of the clinic and the University Medical Center.
Therapy
Out- and inpatient therapies are administered through close collaboration of expert teams of doctors accompanied by psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, and trained carers. A complete spectrum of nationally and internationally established therapeutic methodologies are routinely conducted, including:
- Administration, monitoring and optimization of therapy and medication
- Botulinum-toxin therapy for dystonia, tremors und spasticity
- Modern pump therapeutic approaches (such as intrathecal Baclofen delivery in severe dystonia or spasticity, or L-Dopa or Apomorphine pumps in Parkinson’s
- Application of deep brain stimulation (in close collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery)
Research
Our Section participates in both national and international projects investigating the mechanisms underlying movement disorders (in particular Parkinson’s and dystonia) as well as the optimization of current and future therapeutic regimes.
