Research topic

Studying at an institution of higher education is formative for the professional as well as for the personal development of young adults. University students are confronted with many challenges, such as developing and implementing their concept of life and their values, while trying to handle the demands of their studies and the transition to the labor market as well as their private life (relationships, well-being and health) at the same time.
Healthy Campus Mainz (HCM) represents an interdisciplinary project under the leadership of the Institute for Occupational, Social and Environmental Medicine, in which the Department of Work and Organizational Psychology, the Department of Communication, the Institute for Sport Science, Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation and Disease Prevention, and the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy are involved. The aim is the implementation of a holistically oriented health management for university students of the Johannes-Gutenberg University Mainz and the University Medical Center Mainz, prevention of somatic and mental health issues and promoting university students’ health behavior.
The HCM group of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy focuses on university students’ mental health in order to determine which mental health issues affect the university students in Mainz the most. Relevant risk and protective factors in the development of mental disorders in university students are investigated. Based on these empirically derived data, concrete preventive measures to promote the mental health of university students as well as psychotherapeutic interventions tailored to university students’ needs are developed, implemented and evaluated.
