The Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) is one of the largest population-based health studies in the world and has been conducted at the University Medical Center Mainz since 2007. The goal of the study is to better understand the development, progression, and prevention of common diseases. The study focuses in particular on cardiovascular diseases, as well as disorders of the metabolism, the immune system, mental health, the eyes, the skin, and hearing. More than 15,000 people from Mainz and the Mainz-Bingen district are participating in the GHS and are being examined repeatedly over many years. The study is currently in its second phase, during which participants are being examined for the third time at the study center. At the same time, the cohort is being specifically expanded to gain new insights into health, the development of disease, and healthy aging. The GHS brings together numerous clinics and institutes at Mainz University Medical Center, as well as national and international research partners, in an interdisciplinary research network.
Background
Due to demographic changes and shifts in lifestyle habits—such as a lack of physical activity and unhealthy diets—conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, and lipid metabolism disorders are steadily increasing worldwide. These conditions are among the most significant risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Based on these findings, the GHS was launched in 2007. At the same time, the study investigates which factors contribute to a long and healthy life and how diseases can be detected early.
Objectives of the Study
To better understand the causes, risk factors, and protective factors of various diseases and to examine long-term changes in the health of the population.

Since its inception, the GHS has evolved into a central research platform for the University Medical Center Mainz. The health data and biological samples collected form the basis for numerous scientific projects, specialized cohorts, and interdisciplinary research collaborations. As a result, the GHS contributes to national and international health research far beyond its original research questions and enables the investigation of a wide range of medical topics across various disciplines.
