Sample Management
Based on a sample management database (PMDB), a graphical user interface (Sample Manager) is used for biobanking. It enables the documentation of stored sample types, their study-specific archiving, as well as the documented retrieval and subsequent return of samples to storage.
Sample Types, Quantities and Preanalytics
Standard Monovettes containing citrate plasma, EDTA plasma, serum, and citrate PFA, as well as urine, monocyte RNA, tear fluid, periodontal pocket swabs, DNA, and RNA collected using the PAXgene Luer system are just some of the sample types processed in the laboratory of the Biobank for Liquid and Cellular Biomaterials. The maximum dimensions for stored samples are 9.5 x 13.5 x 13.5 cm (H x W x D).
To ensure a high level of comparability in sample quality for research diagnostics, the harmonization of preanalytics and storage management is incorporated into a quality management system. Detailed manuals and SOPs for preanalytics and storage management are defined as standards and implemented using the sample management system. A high degree of automation in preanalytics and storage systems monitored around the clock at -80°C ensure a high standard of biobanking at the University Medical Center Mainz.
