Childhood and adolescent cancer survivors are invited to participate in the CVSS Study by the German Childhood Cancer Registry (GCCR). All examinations take place at the study centre of the Gutenberg Health Study at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. A range of examination methods are used to conduct a comprehensive health assessment with a particular focus on the cardiovascular system. The examinations at the study centre take approximately six hours in total and are conducted by specially trained medical staff. All examinations are free of charge. Participants receive a comprehensive report containing the directly assessed and medically relevant examination results, which they can discuss with their general practitioner or specialist.
Below you will find a brief overview of the examinations:
- Information about the examination procedures and written consent to participate in the study
- Documentation of current medication
- Measurement of resting heart rate, resting blood pressure, lung function and carbon monoxide levels in exhaled air
- Assessment of vascular function using ultrasound of the brachial artery, digital volume pulse measurement, pulse wave analysis, assessment of blood flow in the legs and cardiovascular regulation
- Body measurements, body temperature, ECG, blood sample collection and urine sample
- Ultrasound examination of the abdominal aorta and leg veins, and assessment of the venous system
- Neurocognitive testing
- Ultrasound examination of the carotid bifurcation and two- and three-dimensional ultrasound examination of the heart
- Personal interview and questionnaires
- Eye examination and collection of a tear fluid sample
The CVSS Study is an observational study. The comprehensive individual examinations are conducted in a comparable, standardised manner for all participants and do not include individual medical advice or treatment. Participants receive their examination results for further discussion with their general practitioner or specialist. They can assess the results in the context of the participant’s medical history and, if necessary, arrange further examinations.
