The CVSS Study is an interdisciplinary collaborative project involving the following institutions at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz:
- Paediatric Haematology, Oncology and Haemostaseology at the Center for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine
- Institute of Medical Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics (IMBEI)
- German Childhood Cancer Registry
- Gutenberg Health Study (GHS), Preventive Medicine, Center for Cardiology
In April 2010, a new long-term follow-up clinic was established within the Department of Paediatric Haematology, Oncology and Haemostaseology at the Center for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine of the University Medical Center Mainz. The clinic is specifically aimed at adult survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer.
The German Childhood Cancer Registry (GCCR), based at the Institute of Medical Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics (IMBEI) at the University Medical Center Mainz, has registered approximately 95% of all paediatric oncology patients under the age of 15 in Germany since 1980 (now more than 50,000 cases). The registry contains information on the type of cancer, age, sex, treatment outcomes, the study protocol used and the treating hospital, as well as basic follow-up data. Almost all people diagnosed with cancer during childhood or adolescence in Germany are enrolled in the respective disease-specific therapy optimisation study of the German Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH) and are therefore treated according to standardised protocols throughout Germany. The GCCR works closely with the therapy optimisation studies and regularly updates the data collected.
The Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) is a large-scale, prospective and representative population-based study. Since April 2007, the study has been conducted by Preventive Medicine at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz as an interdisciplinary research project in collaboration with other departments of the University Medical Center Mainz. The study investigates the health of the population in the Rhine-Main region, with a particular focus on cardiovascular health. Other areas of research include cancer, eye diseases and disorders of the immune system, metabolism and mental health.
Between 2007 and 2012, more than 15,000 people from a representative population sample were enrolled in the study and examined at the study centre.
The GHS is a collaborative project involving six departments of the University Medical Center Mainz, including Psychosomatic Medicine, Cardiology and Angiology, Medical Statistics, Ophthalmology, and Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine.
