Welcome

on the website of the Institute for Medical Biometry, Epidemiology, and Informatics (IMBEI).

Scientific progress can only be achieved through appropriate methodology. Our primary goal is therefore to support medical research in the service of human health by drawing on our diverse methodological expertise in the fields of medical biometry, epidemiology, informatics, and medical documentation. The application of analytical methods in research, teaching, and consulting encompasses the entire spectrum of (bio)informatics, statistics, and epidemiology, including modern methods of machine learning and artificial intelligence. In doing so, the IMBEI works closely with clinical, preclinical, and theoretical departments, as well as with the platforms of the University Medical Center at Johannes Gutenberg University. The IMBEI offers consulting services and opportunities for collaboration in the development and validation of questionnaires, in the planning, conduct, and data management of clinical and population-based studies, as well as in statistical and bioinformatics analysis.

The German Childhood Cancer Registry (DKKR) is based at the IMBEI. Here, issues in cancer epidemiology—such as the analysis of incidence and survival, the causes of cancer in children and adolescents, and the long-term effects of oncological treatments—play an important role.

IMBEI is home to an interdisciplinary team of approximately 100 dedicated staff members who undertake numerous tasks in research and teaching. As a unit of the University Medical Center, IMBEI is involved in the methodological training of students in human medicine and dentistry. The fundamentals of scientific work are taught in the elective course “Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM),” and the fundamentals of epidemiology, biometrics, and informatics are covered in the interdisciplinary course Q1. In addition, the IMBEI offers a postgraduate and consecutive degree program leading to a Master of Science in Epidemiology (MSE).

If you are interested in collaborating on a scientific project, we recommend contacting us as early as possible. This allows us to set the right course—regarding study design and data collection from patients or study participants, as well as in the context of laboratory tests—already during the planning phase.

IMBEI – you can count on us.
