Who is the target audience for the consecutive Master (120 ECTS)?

The consecutive Master is aimed at graduates with a first university degree who wish to immediately embark on a research-oriented Master's program.

Typically, applicants have a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in a relevant field of study, such as natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, social sciences, and health sciences.


Which bachelor's degree is usually expected?

A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, social sciences, and health sciences with a minimum grade of satisfactory (= 3.0) is required.


Who checks the admission requirements?

The formal admission check is carried out by the Admissions Office of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, not by the program coordinator. The Admissions Office makes the final decision on whether a degree meets the admission requirements.


Can I check in advance whether my degree is suitable?

A binding assessment is only possible via the official application, as the admissions office evaluates each degree individually.


Can I enter a higher semester?

No, it is not possible to enter a higher semester.


When is the application deadline?

From April 1 to May 15 for the start of studies in the winter semester.


Can I submit my application after 15 May?

No, applications will not be accepted after the deadline.

Can I submit my documents by email or as a paper hard copy?

Documents provided by email, postal mail, or handed in personally will not be considered.


Will an incomplete application be considered?

No, incomplete applications cannot be considered.


If my application is rejected or if I fail the interview, will there be a second chance?

Yes, you can apply to the programme again the following year.


How many students are admitted to the programme every year?

Approximately 15 students are admitted to the programme every year.


Can I enroll as a part time student?

No, only full time study is possible in the consecutive programme.


Are there any tuition fees?

No. Only the regular semester fee is charged (approx. € 350).


What is the teaching language of the programme?

Most courses and lectures of the core modules and elective modules and the corresponding exams are held in English. Thus good English language skills are a prerequisite. In the consecutive programme the skill and additional modules are held in German. Thus, very good German language skills (DSH-2 level) are required.


Do I need proof of English proficiency for my application?

Yes, you need a proof of required English language skills at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Acceptable forms of proof are specified in the appendix to § 7a (3) of the enrollment regulations of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. This proof is also deemed to have been provided by presenting a German high school diploma (Abitur) showing that at least five years (four years for G8) of English were taken in school and completed with at least a “sufficient” grade or 5 points.


Are German language skills required?

Yes, German skills at DSH-2 level are a prerequisite (DSH-2 means that applicants understand complex technical language and can express themselves confidently in writing and orally).


Is work experience required before applying for the programme?

Work experience is not a requirement for admission to the consecutive programme.


Does the programme offer any scholarships?

The M.Sc. Epidemiology programme does not offer any scholarships.


How is the weekly schedule set up?

The programme has a modular structure. Usually, you will spend 1–2 weeks in Mainz, with classes generally running from 10:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. each day. In the weeks between modules, you will prepare for exams or write seminar papers, etc.


Can I finish the programme in one year by taking extra courses?

No, this is a 2-year programme which cannot be completed in one year.


What type of visa should I apply for?

Students from most countries outside the European Union will require a student visa. We strongly advise you to contact the German embassy and/or consulate in your country of residence to ensure that you apply for the correct type of visa specific to your situation. Please make sure to check well in advance what the exact entry permit regulations applicable to your nationality are.

How can I find accommodation?

Finding accommodation in Mainz might be difficult, especially in September, October and November, when many new students arrive in the city. Therefore, it is advisable to start looking for accommodation as soon as possible. Most students live in private rooms or apartments. Rooms in students’ halls or residence usually have long waiting lists. Most of these rooms are managed by “Studierendenwerk Mainz”.
