7th RUHR School of Modern Epidemiology (7 - 10 July 2026)
This year's 7th RUHR School of Modern Epidemiology, which will take place from July 7 to 10, 2026, at the Haus der Technik in Essen, will focus on the topic of “Applied Epidemiologic Analysis for Causal Inference.” Prof. Katherine Lesko, Johns Hopkins University, is a renowned methodologist in causal inference and has made a name for herself in the USA thanks to her exceptional teaching skills in explaining this topic in an understandable way, not only in theory but also in practice using concrete study data.
The four-day RUHR School will derive the theoretical foundations of causal inference. In practical “paper and pencil” exercises and hands-on computer labs (either R or SAS), the principles of causal inference will be applied to concrete data sets and explored in depth. The goal is for participants to leave the RUHR School with a theoretical understanding of causal inference and the ability to apply causal inference methods in their own empirical studies.
Topics in causal inference include: causal identification conditions, target quantities, potential outcomes, structural causal models (including DAGs), target trial framework, estimands framework, target population principle, g-methods, inverse probability weighting, and g-computation.
The RUHR School is of interest to anyone who wants to draw causal conclusions based on empirical data and is relevant to clinical research, epidemiological research, medical data science, and machine learning.
Registration is open until June 2, 2026. Further details on course content and registration can be found on the following website: imibe.uk-essen.de/lehre/ruhr-school/.

1st prize (endowed with 200€)
Jana Conrad et al.: Comparative effectiveness of vancomycin and metronidazole on event-free survival after initial infection in patients with Clostridioides difficile— a German multicentre cohort study, Clinical Microbiology and Infection (2024), 30, 1433-1438
2nd prize
Julia Ortmann et al.: The Dual Trajectories of Depressive Symptoms and Social Support. A Population-Based Cohort Study Among Swedish Adults Across 23 Years, Psych Res Clin Pract (epub ahead), DOI: 10.1176/appi.prcp.20240063
3rd prize
Marielle Wirth et al.: Development and validation of a multivariable risk prediction model for hepatic steatosis in patients with HIV infection, AIDS 2024, 38: 447–454
The award ceremony took place on 11 March 2025 in Mainz at the IMBEI. Ms Conrad presented her award-winning work in a short talk. She and Ms Wirth then shared their first experiences in scientific publishing.
Welcome to the MSE students of cohort 20
