18.08.2025 We congratulate Luana Silva on her first-time first author publication in the European Journal of Immunology: “The Streptomyces metabolite thiostrepton inhibits regulatory T cell differentiation and function to boost antitumor immune responses.” In collaboration with Prof. Alves-Filho (University of São Paulo), colleagues from UMC Mainz, and under the senior authorship of Prof. Sparwasser , the study identifies thiostrepton as a novel inhibitor of regulatory T cells (Tregs). By impairing Treg function in both human and murine systems, thiostrepton sucessfully enhanced anti-tumor immunity and reduced tumor burden. These findings highlight its potential as a low-risk, adjuvant immunotherapy approach to improve cancer treatment outcomes. Congratulations to all involved on this important achievement!

14.08.2025 Following the success of the "Immunometabolism & Beyond" symposium hosted by the IMMH this May - part of the 5th Meeting of the Sino-German Mobility Program M-0351 (co-led by Peiying Li and Tim Sparwasser) - we are excited to announce an open call for submissions to a dedicated Special Issue of the same name in the European Journal of Immunology. Guest edited by Peiying Li and Tim Sparwasser, this issue will explore the dynamic intersection of immunity and metabolism across diverse systems and disease contexts, from the CNS and liver to cancer, autoimmunity, infection, and vaccine development. From basic mechanisms to translational applications, all perspectives are welcome. All conference participants are guaranteed peer review for their submitted manuscripts, but submissions are also warmly invited from researchers who did not attend the symposium. The submission deadline is January 31, 2026.
We invite you to contribute your latest research and help push the boundaries of immunometabolism and its applications beyond.
Welcome to the Homepage of the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene!
Our institute represents the field of medical microbiology and hygiene in the areas of patient care, research and teaching.
As part of patient care, we provide comprehensive infectious disease care - this includes microbiological diagnostics of infectious diseases, screening tests and specialist advice on infectious disease issues. Another focus is hospital hygiene.
Use the navigation bar at the top of this page to find further information on the various areas and services offered by our institute.
