20.05.2026 The University Medical Center Mainz awarded an honorary Doctor of Medicine degree to Prof. Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi, Nobel laureate Osaka University. The Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene congratulates him on this outstanding academic honor. Through his discovery and characterization of regulatory T cells, Prof. Sakaguchi played a pivotal role in establishing the field of peripheral immune tolerance, for which he was awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. His pioneering research has laid the groundwork for new therapies against autoimmune diseases and has also had a lasting impact on immunological research in Mainz. Yesterday was entirely dedicated to the guest of honor. Prof. Sakaguchi delivered an inspiring scientific lecture on the topic “Regulatory T cells for immune tolerance” to a packed lecture hall on campus at noon, at the invitation of the IMMH and TRR 355. In the evening, the ceremonial conferral of the honorary doctorate took place in the Glass House of the Staatstheater Mainz.
The IMMH extends its warmest congratulations on this well-deserved honor and the inspiring exchange!

Prof. Alves-Filho has been awarded a prestigious three-year fellowship by the Gutenberg Research College (GRC) and has recently arrived in Mainz for his inaugural visit. As part of this fellowship, he will join the IMMH twice a year for 30-day research stays. His dedicated research project will focus on the role of immune cells in cancer and autoimmunity. Prof. Alves-Filho’s extensive expertise will be a significant asset to several of our Collaborative Research Centres (SFBs). Prof. Alves-Filho was officially honored and welcomed today at the GRC Jahresfeier 2026 by GRC Director Prof. Mita Banerjee and Deputy Director Prof. Tobias Bopp. We look forward to a highly productive transatlantic collaboration and the exceptional scientific exchange his fellowship brings to the IMMH and the University Medical Center Mainz.
