Since 2008, the Sabine M. Grüsser-Sinopoli Outpatient Clinic for Behavioral Addictions has been the first outpatient clinic in Germany to offer group therapy for computer game and internet addiction in addition to therapy for pathological gambling. In this way, the University Medical Centre Mainz is responding to the currently increasing demand of people suffering from computer game addiction and internet-related disorders and is thus closing an existing gap in outpatient care. Following the growing occurrence of internet-related disorder the Outpatient Clinic for Behavioral Addictions is continuously developing innovative therapy approaches for the disorder and its subtypes (e.g. Online Sex Addiction). Therapy approaches are strictly derived from current research findings and regularly evaluated.

What does the Outpatient Clinic for Behavioral Addictions offer?

  • Outpatient group therapy with focus on pathological gambling (ICD 10 F63.0) for adults
  • Outpatient group therapy for Internet-related Disorders (Computer Game Addiction, Social Media Addiction and Online Sex Addiction) in adults
  • Behavioral therapy concept including interactional relationship building
  • Problem-solving training, development of alternative behavior, relapse prevention, exposure training, role-playing (exercises in verbal/non-verbal communication), skills training.
  • We offer counselling sessions for adult relatives of adolescent gambling and computer game addicts. Costs are incurred for these counselling sessions, which are to be paid by self. This does not imply any entitlement to treatment by a head physician.
