Kardiovaskuläre Erkrankungen zählen zu den häufigsten Todesursachen in Deutschland und anderen europäischen Ländern. Sie entstehen häufig auf dem Boden atherosklerotischer Gefäßwandveränderungen und manifestieren sich klinisch (nach Ruptur eines vulnerablen Plaques mit nachfolgender Thrombose) als akuter Myokardinfarkt oder Schlaganfall. Das Vorliegen metabolischer Störungen wie Diabetes mellitus, Hypercholesterinämie oder Adipositas erhöht das Risiko, an kardiovaskulären Erkrankungen zu leiden oder daran zu versterben.
Ziel der Professur ist ein besseres Verständnis der Pathomechanismen und molekularen Mediatoren, welche dem erhöhten kardiovaskulären Risiko insbesondere beim Vorliegen metabolischer Störungen zugrunde liegen sowie die Entwicklung und Validierung neuer Ansatzpunkte präventiver und therapeutischer Maßnahmen.

experimentelle Überprüfung potentieller Mediatoren und Kandidatengene
Identifizierung und vorklinische Erprobung molekularer Zielstrukturen diagnostischer, präventiver und therapeutischer Strategien
Evaluation von Biomarkern eines erhöhten kardiovaskulären Risikos
Unsere Forschungsarbeiten beinhalten die
Evaluation spezifischer Faktoren in Mausmodellen kardiovaskulärer Erkrankungen (z.B. Thrombose, Restenose, Atherosklerose, akuter Myokardinfarkt, Ischämie) und vaskulären Zellen in Kultur
Translation von Ergebnissen der experimentellen Forschung in die Klinik und Überprüfung an humanem Probenmaterial
Überprüfung im Rahmen klinischer Studien gewonnener Erkenntnisse in genetisch veränderten Mauslinien oder Zelllinien
