Charles D. Mills discovered M1 and M2 macrophages. His investigations changed the understanding about interactions and function of the immune system. He prarticulary studied the metabolism of arginine to ornithine and nitric oxide in macrophages and explained how these cells are able to react on different types of inflammation especially in wounds and growing tumors.
