Dermatology

The Department of Dermatology at Mainz University Hospital is the only university hospital in Rhineland-Palatinate that treats patients with dermatological diseases at the highest medical level. Depending on the severity and nature of their illness, the affected patients receive both inpatient and outpatient care. The outpatient care focuses on the polyclinic and the special consultation hours. A qualified team of dermatologists and various medical and nursing professionals ensure that patients receive comprehensive diagnostics and therapy.
The skin, being the largest organ of the human body, is exposed to constantly changing influences. Thereby, the skin can also get sick - the number of skin cancer patients has been rising steadily for a while. The good news is: If skin cancer is detected early, it can usually be cured.
Skin cancer can look many different ways. Black skin cancer - also called malignant melanoma - is the most malignant form. In Germany, more than 18,000 people develop malignant melanoma every year. Risk factors are mostly UV exposure with recurring sunburns, but there is also a hereditary predisposition. A very reliable method to detect possible skin cancer is skin cancer screening. The entire body is being examined for skin changes. Suspicious looking skin can be recorded using our modern photo documentation.
Another large spectrum of the skin clinic is allergology. Many substances in the environment are identified by our immune system as "foreign substances" that trigger an immune response. However, when antibodies of a particular allergy causing kind are being produced, this can sometimes be harmful. In order to diagnose potential allergies, we offer an allergy screening by taking a blood sample and, if necessary, a prick test (measures the tendency to allergies).
We can also offer you special services in phlebology and phlebo surgery. Acute and chronic venous diseases are among the most common disorders of the German population.
