Otorhinolaryngology

In the head and neck area, a variety of diseases can successfully be prevented through early treatment. Prevention is of particular importance in regards to the development of tumor diseases in the head and neck area. Preliminary stages, from which tumors can develop over the course of many years, can usually be removed without much effort and even tumors diagnosed in early stages can effectively be treated by laser surgery. In order to prevent chronic inflammatory diseases in the paranasal sinuses, in the area of the ears, salivary glands and cervical lymph nodes, inflammatory changes should be detected and treated quickly so the spread of inflammation as well as damage to the nearby sensory organs can be avoided. In particular, chronic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses can lead to chronic bronchitis or even therapy-resistant asthma in case of constant irritation of the deeper airways. If snoring and sleep-related breathing disorders cause unnoticed breathing pauses at night, there is a long-term risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. Such breathing pauses can be detected through a polygraphy (in home sleep screening). In particular cases, an in-patient polysomnography must be arranged. Increased attention and early treatment is also important for hearing disorders, since these usually begin outside the actual speech range. In the early stages of the disease there is a good chance that further progression can be prevented and tinnitus can be treated successfully. For severe hearing disorders, modern medicine offers a variety of effective medical and surgical therapies. In addition to a thorough assessment of your risk factors for the above-mentioned diseases, the preventive medicine program of the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic consists of an endoscopic examination of the nose, paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx and ears. In addition to hearing diagnostics for sound and speech intelligibility, an activity measurement of the auditory sensory cells and the vestibular organ as well as an ultrasound examination of the salivary glands, cervical lymph nodes and the thyroid gland will be performed. Depending on the assessment of the individual risk situation, a screening for sleep-related breathing disorders (polygraphy) will be offered. Furthermore, there is the opportunity for precise allergy diagnostics.
