  • Head of Study: Professor Philipp Wild, MD (Preventive Cardiology and Preventive Medicine, Department of Medicine 2), Dr. Oec. troph. Hiltrud Merzenich (Institute of Medical Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics), Prof. Jörg Faber, MD (Pediatric Haematology/ Oncology/ Hemostaseology)
  • ClinicalTrials. gov-ID-No. : NCT02181049

Summary

Due to ongoing improvements in therapy, proportions of long-term survivors of childhood cancer have been rising in the last decades. Therefore the investigation of late sequelae is moving more into focus, especially in relation to therapies.

Research on cardiovascular diseases in persons after childhood cancer is the main topic of the CVSS-Study. This prospective cohort study is designed to gain a better understanding of frequencies, causes and the course of cardiovascular diseases in survivors of childhood cancer. The study is performed in a close interdisciplinary cooperation between Pediatric Haematology/ Oncology / Hemostaseology at the Department of Child and Adolescent Medicine, the Institute of Medical Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics, the German Childhood Cancer Registry, and the Gutenberg Health Study at the Department of Medicine 2 within the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The project is supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

About 2000 persons who were treated for childhood cancer between 1980 and 1990 at the University Medical Center Mainz or in surrounding hospitals are invited. The subjects are selected by the German Childhood Cancer Registry. Study participants are examined in a 6 h examination program, focused on cardiovascular diseases. These examinations, starting in October 2013, are performed at the Gutenberg Health Study Center at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. A comprehensive biobank enables biomolecular examinations. Within the framework of the work program of the “Clinical Epidemiology” of the CTH questions in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis are researched.
