Forensic psychiatric research at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy focuses on psychopathological patterns and mental disorders that are important in the development of social adjustment disorders and delinquent behavior. These comprise above all impulsive and aggressive behavior, disorders of emotion regulation, personality disorders, as well as the attention deficit-/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In terms of methodology and content, the main goal is to utilize the psychiatric and psychological research skills available in the Psychiatric and Psychotherapy Clinic for investigating relevant questions from a criminological point of view. ADHD as one of the most frequent developmental disorders is often associated with conduct problems in childhood and delinquent behavior in later life. Therefore, we have set us the task to distangle the relation between ADHD and social maladaptation and delinquency, in particular. The group is also involved in the development of diagnostic tools and the evaluation of treatment programs for adult ADHD in general psychiatry.

Major research topics:

  • Neurobiological correlates of aggressive-impulsive behavior and emotional dysregulation in offenders

  • Interactions of genetic and environmental factors for social adaptation and the development of aggressive-violent behavior

  • Impact of ADHD in the development of different forms of delinquent behavior

Research collaborations:

  • Institute of Forensic Psychology and Psychiatry of the University of Saarland (Prof. Dr. Rösler),

  • Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the University Medical Center Mainz (Prof. Dr. Huss),

  • Laboratory for Psychiatric Neurobiology of the Psychiatric University Hospital Würzburg (Prof. Dr. Reif).

  • Center for Children Youth and Families at the University of Vermont (Prof. Thomas M. Achenbach)
